Primer ensayo español de una vacuna que protege contra el desarrollo del sida

Investigadores españoles anunciaron ayer el inicio de un ensayo de la primera vacuna desarrollada en España contra el sida, que no evita la infección por VIH pero sí protege contra el desarrollo de la enfermedad.

El ensayo, coordinado por el Hospital Clínico de Barcelona, se iniciará en enero próximo con 30 voluntarios no infectados, a 24 de los cuales se inyectará la nueva vacuna (MVA-B), mientras que al resto se les proporcionará placebo y servirán de grupo de control.

La vacuna tiene cuatro antígenos modificados (gag, pol, env y nef), que son las sustancias que desencadenan la formación de anticuerpos en el organismo, que se han modificado de esta variante del virus, y que se introducirán en el organismo a través del vector transportador
poxvirus MVA.

reforzar el sistema inmune Los científicos puntualizan que no se trata de una vacuna que previene el virus del VIH “porque un paciente infectado tiene él solo más virus que los que hay en una pandemia global de gripe en un año”, y que lo que buscan es “que una vez infectados, los pacientes no desarrollen el sida porque su sistema inmune esté reforzado y los proteja“.

Los resultados podrían empezar a conocerse a partir de mayo de 2009.
